What is Invisalign?
Invisalign is an almost invisible alternative to braces, which allows the user to forego fixed brackets and wires for a clear plastic aligner – similar to a mouthguard. The aligner is custom-made to perfectly fit your mouth, and you are given a new aligner each fortnight to assist with the realignment of your teeth. The teeth gradually move until they straighten into their final position.
Invisalign aligners are also removable and must be taken out during meal times and when brushing and flossing teeth. Treatment times vary but most typically last between 9 to 18 months, depending on the patient’s condition, as well as how long they wore their aligner for each day (between 20 to 22 hours is recommended daily).
The Invisalign Process
To begin your Invisalign journey, we advise patients to schedule an initial consultation at Harmony Orthodontics. Our orthodontist will perform a thorough assessment of your mouth to ensure you are a candidate for this particular type of treatment. If so, we will then devise a treatment plan, which involves making study models of your teeth and having x-rays taken. Our orthodontist will then review the data for analysis.
Once the treatment plan is agreed to, we send the impressions off to have your new aligners created. The creation process may take 5-6 weeks as each set is individually made. Once received, these aligners will need to be worn for 2-3 weeks before a new set is issued.
You can expect minor discomfort as the aligners are designed to gradually shift your teeth into their desired position, resulting in the straighter and more beautiful smile that you’ve always dreamed of.
